TWP®-units - Tailor Welded Plates in the area of Shipbuilding
The main goal of the shipbuilding is to
automatically join large sections with
state-of-the-art joining technologies, the
plate thickness of the individual sections
being optimized. By means of modern
joining technologies, high productivity
gains, quality improvements of the weld
seams and a higher fitting accuracy of
the sections can be achieved. Besides
the different systems for handling and
positioning the plates and the joining
systems the plate edge preparation is the
core of the tailor welded plate fabrication.
The TWP® systems clamp the plates to be
joined, machine them simultaneously and
weld them. Due to the simultaneous
machining of two opposing edges, the
corresponding plates can be brought
together and welded without any gap.
Additional tack or adjustment work is not
necessary. A "zero" gap is required for the
use of modern laser welding processes or
conventional MIG/MAG welding
processes. The benefits of modern joining
technologies and the speed-optimized
conventional welding technologies
include small weld shrinkage and good
technological properties of the weld seam.
The TWP® systems allow to join plates of
different thickness in various
combinations. In the transition area,
thicker plates are tapered in a
predetermined gradient. Thus smooth
transitions between the plates are
achieved.
